“It’s complicated.”

by DanWolgemuth on October 23, 2020

I’ve said that many times, especially recently.

Politics. Platforms. Justice. Mercy. Medicine. Weather. Economics. Immigration. Law enforcement. Elections. Relationships. Opinions.

Complicated.

Right?

And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:35–40, ESV)

On these two “hang” (NIV) everything.

Complication is an excuse for ignoring the words of Jesus. 613 Jewish laws to choose from…

Then Jesus. The personification of this directive.

Love God. Wholeheartedly. Passionately. Creatively. Emphatically. Courageously. Diligently.

Love your neighbor. Sacrificially. Boldly. Relentlessly. Continuously.

Every part of me, loving God. Every breath in me, serving others.

The most difficult thing you will ever do. But uncomplicated.

It is by this that a watching world will know… that we are His disciples.

Once again… and always. Jesus shows us the way.
