“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:13-14 ESV)
Early this week Mary’s sister, Liz, and her Mom came to visit and to assist. They are both capable of managing a home like a virtuoso handles a violin. Frankly, it escorts me into the classroom of care, and service, and household competence. I have some remedial work to do.
Both Liz and Eunice are accomplished knitters as well as efficient homemakers. That is why today marked a significant milestone when Liz pulled up close to Mary’s wheelchair and began walking her through the process of knitting. It was an amazing site to behold.
It was both a fitting activity and a powerful metaphor. A body on the mend – living out the analogy of King David. Hands connecting, and knotting, and gathering the raw materials – combining them with both the design and the execution to produce a beautiful and functional final product.
God knitted us together. He formed us. He designed us. He is engaged intimately with us. His hands connected us. We are His workmanship. His creation.
Body, mind, soul… working in harmony to produce a uniquely gifted human life.
There is nothing random or haphazard about the plan or quality of this work. The most pointed and damaging lies of Satan attack this notion. They diminish this beauty. They inadequately dismiss the miracle.
But a heart at peace with this reality will praise. A mind illuminated will sing with joy… we stand in awe… we shout with joy.
Yarn, needles, expertise; meet a perfect cosmic plan…
Broken bones cannot constrain what God has knit together. We celebrate. We are witnesses.
To the handiwork of God.
