Wow

by DanWolgemuth on December 22, 2016

It was just a short drive through the neighborhood to discover and inspect the local Christmas lights. Sitting in a car seat in the middle row of Andrew and Chrissy’s Honda minivan was Drew, our twenty-month old grandson who is loaded with unencumbered jabber and joy.

To Drew, Christmas is magic.

At nearly every sight of lights, Drew would emphatically declare… Wow! Just Wow. Often with an outstretched finger to point the way to the object of his admiration… but always Wow.

At first it was endearing, then it became infectious.

Wow.

For most adults, Wow is reserved for something different… for the latest iPhone, automobile, World Series Champion, or estate. Wow is confined to the visually compelling, to the esthetically pleasing, to the innovatively inspiring… but not for Drew.

Wonder oozed out of his lips. Amazement.

“… a child shall lead them” to unfettered awe.

Wow.

The language of a child. The message of Christmas.

Jesus. From the beginning.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4 ESV)

God. Awesome in power, in creativity, in majesty.

Jesus. Among us.

The Word became flesh and blood,
and moved into the neighborhood. (John 1:14a MSG)

Wow came to earth. Wow changed everything.

Wow cried at the breast of his mother.
Wow chose to enter in poverty.
Wow walked on dusty trails.
Wow listened and learned.
Wow taught and astounded.
Wow loved the unimpressive.
Wow called the under qualified.
Wow engaged the outcast.
Wow absorbed injustice.
Wow became our guide… to truth… to God.
Wow became our hope. The hope.
Wow suffered.
Wow died.
Wow conquered.
Wow is scheduled to return. With unimaginable Wow. With unconfined Wow. With justice filled and grace saturated Wow.

Christmas.

Wow in the flesh.

Indeed. The light shines and we simply point and exclaim…

Wow.
