“Oh, the depth of the riches in wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “ ~ Romans 11:33 (ESV)
Mary and I had just experienced a wonderful night of YFCamp as we made our way back to our accommodations for the evening. It was after 9pm, but the west Michigan sky was alive and bright. To our delight our schedule fell perfectly in line to witness a sunset over Lake Michigan.
With about fifteen minutes to spare we found a perfect spot to observe what is impossible to duplicate and equally impossible to describe.
As the sun crept closer and closer to the horizon, it was as though it gained velocity. The cloud bank that at first attempted to obscure our sight now provided a canvas on which rich colors splashed and danced. This was more of a motion picture than a portrait. We watched as the glory and grandeur of God unfolded. We stood, silently…
The sky exploded in silent eruptions of color. Even as the top of the sun disappeared the visual display continued as clouds were sprayed with light and color, much like spotlights on a stage. The source of the light was obscured, but the impact of the power and beauty was far from gone.
Words were few; frankly, they were unnecessary; they were inadequate.
We marveled, and celebrated; and worshiped, and cheered, and rested, and absorbed… and then we basked in the wonder of this God. This awesome, powerful, creative, artistic, extravagant, wonderful God… who splashes color across a western sky… because He can. Because He’s God.
We were specks, but somehow we felt important; with VIP seats; with backstage passes; with credentials we didn’t earn… to watch and revel in the magnificence of God.
He is beyond us, but we find Him. He is awesome, but we know Him.
Because He is God… because He can… because He loves us…
A Michigan sunset.
