My one real exercise passion is road biking. Consequently, our move to Denver was great at feeding this desire. The paved trails that crisscross the city are outstanding. Specifically, the South Platte River Trail is a favorite. It snakes along with the flow of the river all the way to downtown. The path is used extensively. In fact, over much of the distance there is actually a painted center line to organize traffic. This is a path for serious cyclists, which consequently makes me feel like I fit, even though the jury is still out on that subject.
What I’ve come to discover is the “language” of cyclists. As you encounter fully decked, wonderfully equipped riders along the path you use the cyclist’s greeting. From my experience, that’s simply a quickly connected glance and an equally quick nod of the head. It’s the head nod that’s the big deal. It’s like sign language for cyclists. In that single gesture there is acknowledgment, validation and encouragement. With the single click of the head there is hope. It conveys this message: “I’ve been where you’re going.” Sometimes the riders look exhausted and weathered, but the message is reassuring none the less… “I did it!”
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. ~ Hebrews 4:15,16
Did you catch it? The divine head nod. The cyclist greeting at a celestial level. It’s Jesus, catching a quick connecting glance with His children. He tips His head forward in greeting and reassurance. “I’ve been where you’re going” is exactly what He conveys.
… and yes, I’m flooded with hope. Indeed, He did it.
Whatever it is… doubt, fear, pain, frustration, disobedience… Jesus has charted the path to holiness. Join the Overcomer. Accept the nod from the master cyclist.
With confidence… because of Jesus.
